The Vedel Family

El núcleo de la familia Vedel estaba formado por Pierres, su esposa Clara y los hijos de ambos: Catalina, Pedro, Bernabé, Juan, Miguel y María. A lo largo de su trayectoria vital, la familia estuvo acompañada por numerosos oficiales, aprendices y colaboradores que participaron en las distintas obras y proyectos desarrollados por el maestro navarro.

Tras el fallecimiento de Pierres y Clara, sus hijos se establecieron en diferentes localidades de las actuales provincias de Teruel y Zaragoza, manteniendo en muchos casos vínculos personales y profesionales con los lugares donde la familia había residido y trabajado.

The Vedel family was composed of Pierres Vedel, his wife Clara Vizcarret, and their children: Catalina, Pedro, Bernabé, Juan, Miguel, and María. For decades, they shared their lives with craftsmen, assistants, and workers who collaborated on the many architectural projects promoted or directed by Vedel throughout Aragon.

After the death of their parents, the children settled in different towns across the region, preserving the legacy of a family that left a lasting mark on the architecture and society of its time.

Pierres Vedel, a Familiar of the Holy Office

Una faceta tan curiosa como poco conocida de la vida de Pierres Vedel sale a la luz gracias a un proceso judicial de 1608. El documento revela que, durante su estancia en Santa Eulalia del Campo, el arquitecto navarro fue nombrado familiar del Santo Oficio de la Inquisición de Valencia, una distinción que le otorgaba determinados privilegios y reconocimiento social dentro de la comunidad.

“...que viviendo y edificando la dicha iglesia de Sancta Olalla el dicho quondam mase Pierres Vedel fue diputado en familiar del sancto oficio de la inquisición de Valencia en el dicho lugar y la misma familiatura y privilegio después de algunos años le fue confirmado por dicho sancto oficio...”

A curious and little-known aspect of Pierres Vedel's life comes to light through a judicial proceeding dated 1608. The document reveals that, while living and working in Santa Eulalia del Campo, the Navarrese architect was appointed a Familiar of the Holy Office of the Inquisition of Valencia, a distinction that granted him certain privileges and social prestige within the community.

“...while living and building the church of Santa Olalla, the late master Pierres Vedel was appointed a Familiar of the Holy Office of the Inquisition of Valencia in that place, and some years later the same office confirmed both his appointment and privileges...”

Teruel in Vedel's Time

¿Cómo era el Teruel que se encontró Pierres Vedel cuando llegó a la ciudad de Teruel en el siglo XVI? ¿Cómo era la sociedad en aquel momento? ¿Cómo estaba organizada la ciudad y cuántos habitantes tenía? Recomponer la estructura urbana, social y económica de aquel período no resulta difícil. La disposición del núcleo histórico turolense apenas ha experimentado cambios desde entonces. What was the Teruel that Pierres Vedel encountered when he arrived in the city in the 16th century? What was society like at that time? How was the city organized and how many inhabitants did it have?

Reconstructing the urban, social and economic structure of that period is not difficult. The layout of Teruel’s historic centre has undergone very few changes since then. Even if we look back to earlier centuries, the city’s basic urban structure remains largely unchanged.

VEDEL EN TIERRAS TUROLENSES

Tras concluir su intervención en la iglesia de Fuentes de Ebro (Zaragoza), la primera obra documentada de Pierres Vedel en Aragón, el maestro navarro y su familia se establecieron en la ciudad de Teruel. Desde allí organizó buena parte de su actividad profesional, desplazándose con frecuencia para atender los numerosos proyectos que le fueron encomendados.

Con el paso de los años, la familia trasladó su residencia a Santa Eulalia del Campo y, posteriormente, a Albarracín, siguiendo el rastro de las grandes obras que marcaron la trayectoria vital y profesional de Vedel.

After completing his work on the church of Fuentes de Ebro (Zaragoza), the first documented project of Pierres Vedel in Aragon, the Navarrese master and his family settled in the city of Teruel. From there, he organized much of his professional activity, travelling frequently to oversee the many projects entrusted to him.

Over the years, the family moved their residence to Santa Eulalia del Campo and later to Albarracín, following the path of the major works that shaped Vedel’s life and professional career.

LOS PRIMEROS PASOS DE VEDEL EN ARAGÓN

Vedel's First Work in Aragon

Tras su paso por Oricín, entre 1546 y 1550 encontramos a Pierres Vedel trabajando en la que constituye su primera obra documentada en Aragón: la iglesia parroquial de la localidad zaragozana de Fuentes de Ebro. El encargo procedía de la familia Fernández de Heredia, para la que años más tarde volvería a trabajar en Teruel, Daroca, Mora de Rubielos y Albarracín.

Su intervención consistió en unificar y armonizar el interior del templo, en cuya construcción habían participado previamente diversos maestros y artífices.

After his stay in Oricín, between 1546 and 1550, Pierres Vedel can be found working on what is considered his first documented project in Aragon: the parish church of Fuentes de Ebro, a town in the province of Zaragoza. The commission came from the Fernández de Heredia family, for whom he would later work again in Teruel, Daroca, Mora de Rubielos and Albarracín.

His task was to unify and harmonize the interior of the church, where several builders and craftsmen had previously intervened.

LA LLEGADA DE VEDEL A ESPAÑA

Vedel's Arrival in Spain

Hasta la fecha se desconocen tanto las circunstancias como el momento exacto que llevaron a Pierres Vedel a establecerse en España. Es posible que su llegada se produjera a través del paso de Roncesvalles, una de las principales vías de comunicación entre Navarra y los territorios franceses.

Lo que sí sabemos es que ya se encontraba en la Península antes de 1543, año en que aparece por primera vez en la documentación conservada. Su nombre figura entonces en la localidad navarra de Oricín, donde participó en la tasación de unas obras ejecutadas por otro maestro constructor. Por aquellas mismas fechas contrajo matrimonio con Clara Vizcarret, quien habría de acompañarle durante toda su trayectoria profesional y en los numerosos desplazamientos que realizó posteriormente por tierras aragonesas.

To date, neither the exact circumstances nor the precise moment that led Pierres Vedel to settle in Spain are known. It is possible that he entered the country through the Roncesvalles Pass, one of the principal routes linking Navarre with the French territories.

What we do know is that he was already in the Iberian Peninsula before 1543, the year in which he first appears in the surviving documentary records. His name is mentioned in the Navarrese village of Oricáin, where he took part in the appraisal of works carried out by another master builder. Around the same time, he married Clara Vizcarret, who would accompany him throughout his professional career and during the many journeys he later undertook across Aragon.

El lugar de nacimiento de Pierres Vedel aún no ha podido determinarse con total certeza. A día de hoy, existen diversas hipótesis basadas en los documentos estudiados hasta el momento. Algunas teorías lo sitúan como originario de la Picardía, otras apuntan a Borgoña o al Bearne. Finalmente, también se plantea —a partir de datos de carácter genealógico— la posibilidad de que naciera en Uzès, una localidad cercana a Nimes, en el actual departamento francés de
Gard.

The exact birthplace of Pierres Vedel has yet to be definitively established. To date, several hypotheses have been proposed based on the available historical documentation. Some theories identify him as a native of Picardy, while others suggest Burgundy or the Béarn region. A final possibility, supported by genealogical evidence, points to Uzès, a town near Nîmes in what is now the Gard department of southern France.

A Key Source for the script of Pierres Vedel and the Magic of Water

La mayor fuente documental empleada para la elaboración del guion del documental Pierres Vedel y la magia del agua (2021) fue la tesis doctoral de Javier Ibáñez Fernández, publicada bajo el título:

Gracias a la minuciosidad de esta obra, fue posible construir una base histórica sólida y rigurosa para nuestro relato audiovisual.
